"Forty works by twenty-four Cuban visual artists are featured in Volume I of this promotional art-book project. This ongoing outreach initiative, open to all Cuban artists, complements various lines of work pursued by Banco de Ideas Z to promote contemporary visual art with a cultural focus. Moving beyond personal or institutional inertia, internalized paternalism, or the almost obligatory reference to the socioeconomic context, BIZ works with modest resources and firm resolve—steadily and without pause—toward national and international recognition for Cuban artists and the integration of art into other sociocultural spheres. This volume gives voice and space to diverse individual artistic visions and genres: from the draftsman grappling with the signs of "the real" to the postmodern appropriator, the graphic humorist, and the folk or naïve artist. They appear together because they all have value. Talent is not the exclusive province of any single group; the contemporary artistic fabric is woven from the contributions of all these creators. To provide basic information about the artists, the publication includes a brief summary of their professional backgrounds. In addition to details regarding their specialization and studies, the artists' first and most recent exhibitions are listed; an (P.) indicates a solo exhibition, while a (C.) denotes a group exhibition.
This promotional art book remains open to all artists wishing to participate. For researchers, critics, cultural promoters, and the general public, it will serve as a source of information, reference, and insight into a multifaceted dimension of Cuban culture: the visual arts."
