It recounts his twenty-three day journey on foot from Austria, across the Alps, to Rome. He is held up and pressed along by ailment, storm, vague destination. He follows and is pursued by water, follows and is pursued by that which he hopes to avoid.
It is maybe more precisely a map. One revealed to us by its walker, not only in place-names and waterways, but in its referential impression-threading of landscape to film, to literature, art, a movement, a famous face. So it is a map of the walker, too, though he is slow to disclose, describes around himself. We learn him first on his surface, of dress, aches, breakfasts. Then in his negative, in what he avoids—sacrifice, pilgrimage, Catholic bearing. It (he, anything) admits more honestly by what it eludes.
