Rare Black Students Psychological Association Newsletter from 1971 with a striking illustrated cover depicting Black professionals of various occupations. A revealing document published relatively early, within the first three years of the BSPA's existence.
The issue features reports on the Black Students Psychological Association national convention which took place May 5-8, 1971 in Atlanta, Georgia by Brother Ralph Horton, the Religion Team led by Wallace Wormley, and Dr. Robert E. Williams on "genuine black happenings". Also featured is an appeal for support for Harlem Prep: a community-led private school attempting to create "Black Education", two poems by Sylvia L. Dixon ( a student at Harlem Prep), a local chapter news section featuring notice of pertinent articles and Black psychology papers, an editorial lamenting the loss of life in the Attica Riots and calling for Black psychologists to serve Black prisoners, letters from prisoners, fellowship and scholarship opportunities, job openings and more general announcements.
The Black Students Psychological Association was founded in 1969 to support Black Psychologists, organize a larger conversation with the American Psychological Association, and help black people in general through psychology.
