May Wilson (1905–1986) was an American artist and a prominent figure in the New York City avant-garde scene. A pioneer of the feminist and mail art movements, she is most recognized for her Surrealist junk assemblages and photocollages, which she called "Ridiculous Portraits." Following the end of her marriage in the spring of 1966, May Wilson moved to New York City at the age of 61. She first lived in the Chelsea Hotel before moving to a neighboring studio, where she hosted notable parties and earned the nickname, "Grandma Moses of the Underground."
